This sermon addresses the mixed emotions of Good Friday by unpacking these precious verses.

Yes, we can rightly feel sombre because Jesus took upon himself the judgement of our sins, and was in a meaningful way forsaken by God the Father as a result. He willingly chose to do this because of his great love for us.

However, we can also rightly feel gladness and joy. This is because of what Jesus' death has achieved for all who believe. He has torn the curtain once and for all that separated us from God. He has defeated death and released the captives to enjoy eternal union with God.

Therefore, let us hold these emotions together, as we dwell on the loving sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
