Poigai Azhwar, Bhoodathazhwar and Peyazhwar are the three Mudhal Azhwars. It is believed they were brought together in close quarters by the divine will.
The story goes as follows: Poigai Azhwar, Bhoodathazhwar and Peyazhwar were all visiting Tirukkovalur. It was raining heavily. Poygai Azhwar took shelter in a closed space in a small cottage. He lied down to rest. A while later Bhoodathazhwar knocked at the entrance. Poygai Azhwar let him in saying “oruvar padukkalam, iruvar amaralam” (ஒருவர் படுக்கலாம் இருவர் அமரலாம்)----meaning one can lie down but two can sit in the space available. They engaged in religious conversation. Soon there was another knock and Peyazhwar was waiting. He was also let in with the note, “moovar nirkalam” (மூவர் நிற்கலாம்)—meaning three people can stand comfortably. Very soon they felt squeezed together. They could feel it but not see who was the “fourth” person who was squeezing them.

Poygai Azhwar sang 100 Pasurams, one after the other in praise of the lord having had an inkling that it might be the lord who was the invisible fourth person. The surrounding darkness vanished at the end of his singing. Bhoodathazhwar sang another 100 Pasurams after which they could see effulgence in the room and they could all see lord Sriman Narayana. Then Peyazhwar sang another 100 Pasurams describing the lord. Together the three hundred Pasurams are labeled as Mudhal, Irandam and Moondram Thiruvandhadhi (Antham means end, Adi means beginning)—i.e., each Pasuram in the 100-song garland was constructed such that the end word of one Pasuram is the beginning word of the subsequent Pasuram and the end point of the 100th Pasuram became the beginning point of the first Pasuram in a circular fashion.

Poigai Azhwar, an incarnation of Panchajanyam of Lord Sriman Narayana was born in the Tamil month of Aippasi [Thiruvonam] at Kanchipuram and has composed Mudhal Thiruvandhadhi.

Bhootathazhwar, an incarnation of the Mace of Lord Sriman Narayana was born in the Tamil month of Aippasi [Avittam] at Mahaballipuram and has composed Irandam Thiruvandhadhi.

Peyazhwar, an incarnation of the sword of Lord Sriman Narayana, was born in the Tamil month of Aippasi [Sadayam] at Mylapore, Chennai and has composed Mundram Thiruvandhadhi.

Thirumazhisai Azhwar, an incarnation of Sudarshana Chakra (disc), of Lord Sriman Narayana was born in the Tamil month of Thai [Makham] at Thirumazhisai village near Chennai and has composed Naanmugan Thiruvandhadhi and Thiruchenda viruttam.
