The Great Basin Murders, a series of chilling cases involving female hitchhikers, have cast a long shadow over the American West. These victims, found in Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada, share haunting similarities: they were last seen thumbing rides along Interstates 15, 80, and 90, only to meet with brutal and aggressive ends. The discovery of their bodies, often left in remote locales like hilltops, expanses, snowdrifts, and rivers—some posed ritualistically postmortem.

At the heart of this mystery are nine women: Janelle Johnson, Lisa Marie Kimmell, Vikki Lynn Perkins, Patricia Candace Walsh, Barbara Williams, Ermelinda Garza, Bitter Creek Betty, Elko County Jane Doe, and Tonya Teske. Yet, these are not the sole cases bound by striking methodological and victimological threads. Additional investigations, buoyed by newspaper archives, suggest at least four more victims could be intertwined with this grim pattern, including Starr Valley Jane Doe, Tammy Terrell (Arroyo Grande Jane Doe), Amy Bechtel (linked to the Missing 411 phenomenon), and Nikole Bakoles (Saltair Sally).

These cold cases have been reinvigorated by forensic innovation. DNA technology, isotope sampling, and genealogical sleuthing have begun to yield justice, linking three serial killers. Clark Perry Baldwin (the Truck Driver Killer), Robert Ben Rhoades (the Truck Stop Killer), and Dale Wayne Eaton (the LIL Miss Killer). Many believe these serial killers were responsible for many more.

Horrifyingly, there remains another possibility: an uncaught and active serial killer remains on the loose in the area.
