Ep. 33 THE MOSAIC WHOOPING CRANE, Clay Inclusions, mini field trip, the hibiscus!

I start working on the neck and body of the mosaic whooping crane, using an inventory of pre-cut feather shapes in white, gray and dark gray. The patterning on the body has the feathers forming a v-shape which I then fill in. Darker glass on the right side give the neck form and shapes the wing. The wing has fatter v-shapes.
I made a visit to Fused Glass Studios in Decatur, GA to finish up some clay inclusions I started in Ep. 30.    • Ep. 30 TWO HEARTS MOSAIC COMMISSION, ...   The clay is sanded, painted with a colored underglaze and then topped with a clear glaze. Then they are loaded into the kiln for firing. Then back in my studio I finally get to show you the pieces!
BONUS: A visit to my hairdresser to show off mosaics on display there!
Back in the studio I work on the underbelly of the crane, finish the wing and start on the upper leg and bigger tail feathers. Then finally the background is begun with the gorgeous textured gold from my mother-in-law's broken dishes! It is a good look at keystoning around a ring. I show the glass up close and analyze the nuances of working with it.
Then I switch it up by working on the pink hibiscus, starting with distinct leaves and then filling the background with darker green and blues using a modified Opus Musivum.
