On today's Thinker J, we explore the extraordinary life of a Taiwanese artist who spoke through color — Liao Chi-Chun.
Born in 1902 in a humble farming family in Fengyuan, Taichung, Liao lost his parents young and grew up in poverty. Yet nothing could extinguish his passion for art. Inspired partly by a promise made to the woman he loved, he journeyed to Tokyo in 1924, boarding the same ship as the legendary artist Tan Teng-pho (Chen Cheng-Po), to study at the prestigious Tokyo School of Fine Arts.
Upon returning to Taiwan, Liao became not only an outstanding painter but also a key figure in shaping Taiwan's modern art movement. He co-founded the Chidao Association and the Tai-Yang Art Society, and encouraged his students to establish the Fifth Moon Group — lighting the flame of modern Taiwanese art.
In 1962, invited by the US Department of State, he traveled through Europe and America for a year. The experience transformed his style completely. His later works burst with vivid pinks, emerald greens, and radiant blues — a joyful visual language all his own.
In 2026, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts opened a major retrospective celebrating his legacy, titled Rainbow Colors and Lyric Poetry: The Art World of Liao Chi-Chun. Join Jenny as we discover the colorful and moving story behind one of Taiwan's greatest artists!
