エジプトのナイル川中流域にあるヌビア地方には川沿いに古代エジプトの遺跡がいくつも並んでいました。1960年代、ダム建設によって川はダム湖となり、水位が上昇。多くの遺跡に水没の危機が迫ったのです。そこで世界各国が協力し合い、遺跡を移設する救済プロジェクトがスタート。アブ・シンベル神殿やイシス神殿が大工事の末、移築されました。人類の大切な遺産を後世に残すという「世界遺産」の考え方はここから始まったのです！

In the region of Nubia, located in the middle basin of the Nile River in Egypt, there were numerous ancient Egyptian ruins along the riverbank. Due to the construction of an Aswan High dam planned in the 1960s, causing the water level to rise, many archaeological ruins were threatened by submerging.
UNESCO launched an international Campaign for the Safeguarding of the Sites and Monuments of Ancient Nubia.
Many countries were involved cooperated and initiated a rescue project to relocate those monuments.
After extensive construction, Abu Simbel and Isis Temples, and many others were successfully relocated.
This international campaign, aimed to safeguard the treasure of　mankind for future generations, started the idea of "World Heritage."
