This video is Part Two of a series that explores the existing suburban and regional lines of Metropolitan Perth and Regional Western Australia. Perth's railway network grew throughout the state from the 1870's. The first line was a 12 mile timber line opened in 1871, called the Ballaarat Tramline it was constructed by the Western Australian Timber Company. The first government railway between Northampton and Geraldton opened in 1879. The early railways were generally built to the 3' 6" narrow gauge which is still the standard for all existing and new suburban lines.

Transperth is the name given to all Perth's local public transport services, including trains, buses, and ferries. A more recent development is Metrolink, with new lines, revamped/new stations, extensions to existing lines, road/rail crossing mitigation, new rolling stock construction, transport hubs and bus/ rail interchanges planned and currently under construction, with a new rail airport link due to open in 2021.

The subject of this video is the Midland to Perth line. The line was built as an extension of the Fremantle to Guildford line (Part One) which passed through Perth and terminated at Guildford, a town which has a rich history being one of Perth's the earliest settlements. As Perth expanded the choice was made to extend the railway eastward from Guildford to Chidlow wells, a settlement in the Darling Ranges east of Midland, the line opened in 1884. The original Midland Station was called Midland Junction and was situated closer to the existing Woodbridge Station, it closed in 1966. The Midland Terminal in current use was officially opened in 1968. Plans are underway to a build a new Midland Terminus at Bellevue further east and nearer the main shopping precincts and new hospital.

After the line leaves Midland on it's way to Perth it passes through 13 stations, some of which still have buildings that date back to earlier days. Between Bassendean and Guildford there is a spur line into the Western Australian Rail Transport Museum. After Ashfield the new Airport Link Line emerges on the left-hand side from the Swan River Tunnel to join the Midland Line at Bayswater Station, itself the site of major works to come as the terminus for the new Ellenbrook / Morley line. At East Perth there is a connection with Great Southern's weekly Indian Pacific train to Sydney, the regional Prospector train to Kalgoorlie, and the Avonlink train to Northam.


At East Perth there is a connecting walkway to Perth's Optus Stadium which hosts various events. Opened in 2018 the stadium has a capacity up to 65,000, the cost of $1.8 Billion included substantial ground works and new transport infrastructure including a new multi-platform railway station on the Perth - Armadale /Thornlie Line ).

Our journey terminates at Perth station, the original station building from 1881, built as part of the Eastern Railway is partly retained but the rest would be unrecognizable to the founding fathers. The majority of Midland services continue from Perth to Fremantle, providing a regular direct service Midland to Fremantle and vice versa.
