Ep. 190 THE LANDSCAPE OF DUNWOODY MOSAIC ALL TOGETHER PLUS GROUTING AND MORE GROUTING!
Hey Everyone! Welcome to my studio!
My name is Julie Mazzoni and I will be focusing on The Landscape of Dunwoody mosaic for the next little while. It is a 36 foot long, 161 square foot mosaic going in a niche on a busy street corner in Dunwoody, GA. I am partnering with mosaic artist Jennifer Freeman. We are using glass and porcelain tile with thinset and silicone. Our substrate is Hardie Backer With Hydro Defense Technology Fiber Cement Waterproof Backer Board. This week we are laying it out for a final check and grouting! And then grouting some more!

0:04 We're loading up panels to bring to Jennifer's so we can lay them out and take a look at them.
0:57 I arrive at Jennifer's and we lay the last few panels in place. It's huge! And it is so nice to see it all together! Too bad we don't have a drone! It's so hard to see the whole thing!
1:53 Next we put the pieces in that span the panels to make sure they are all accounted for. This takes quite a while. Then we took more photos. This time I loaded my car with half the panels to bring home and start grouting.
2:54 My son helps me bring in the panels and loads up my work tables.
3:23 I'm ready to grout! The grout we've selected is Mapei Flexcolor CQ in Armour. The grout is great because it
1. Never needs sealing.
2. Installs 3 x faster than cement grout
3. Superior crack protection.
4. No efflorescence.
5. Can be used on exterior and commercial applications.
4:30 I'm steering well clear of any areas of overlap that will be put in and grouted at installation.
I've got a couple floats to try out. I dampen the surface to start.
5:33 GRAB A REFRESHMENT and enjoy all the grouting.
6:09 There is a bit of a haze that needs to be buffed off. I'm grouting ceramic, stained glass, and fused glass pieces. The grout goes on a bit light in color and darkens as it sets up. It goes like this:
1. Spread grout on.
2. Wipe grout off. Rinse. Change water, wipe grout off.
3. Wait a bit for it to haze over.
4. Buff haze off with scratch pad and soft cloth.
Repeat with next panel. And next panel. Etc.
