Shinsuke Nakamura faced Samoa Joe for the NXT Title at Takeover Brooklyn in 2016. Joe hit Shinsuke with the Muscle Buster and he kicked out. Shinsuke countered him, hit him with the knee and Joe kicked out. Shinsuke kicked him again, hit him with the Kinshasa and pinned him to become the new champion. Next month on NXT, Joe attacked Shinsuke, continued his assault and threw him on the steel steps. Next week, Joe listed all of Shinsuke’s injuries and demanded the NXT title from William Regal. Regal told him he will fix it and Joe told him he either does that or everyone will look like Shinsuke. A week later, Joe took out the Ealy Brothers. Next week, Joe took out Dan Matha. Two weeks later, Shinsuke sent a message to Joe by taking out Velveteen Dream. They met at Takeover Toronto for the title. Joe threw Shinsuke on the steps, hit him with the Muscle Buster and pinned him to win the title. Three weeks later, they met again. Shinsuke kicked Joe, hit him with the Kinshasa and pinned him to win the title. Next week, they met in a steel cage match. Shinsuke was about to escape the cage, he closed the door and hit Joe with the Kinshasa. Shinsuke hit him once again and pinned him to retain the title.
