C'È, CE & CI SONO: Italian Expressions Explained

Описание к видео C'È, CE & CI SONO: Italian Expressions Explained

Welcome to a new Italian lesson! Today I’ll show you three very common Italian expressions that can sometimes create some confusion: C'È, CE & CI SONO.

--------------------------- SUMMARY OF THE LESSON -------------------------

1 - C'È (0:25)
“C’è” means "there is", therefore you use it to tell about the existence or presence of something. “È” is the third person singular of the verb “essere” (to be).
For example: C’è un ragno sul muro = there’s a spider on the wall

2 - CI SONO (1:24)
“Ci sono” is the plural of “c’è” and hence it means “there are”. “Sono” is the verb “essere” (to be) in the third person plural.
For example: Ci sono due gatti sul tetto = there are two cats on the roof

3 - CE (3:07)
The expression “ce” is always followed by the pronouns LO, LI, LA, LE, or by the word NE. It can be used in three different ways:

1) as a personal pronoun in the first person plural, meaning “a noi” (to us)
In the example below, “ce” replaces the pronoun “a noi” while “la” refers to the car (macchina) :
Che bella macchina. Ce la presti? = what a nice car. Can we borrow it?

2) as an adverb of place, referring to a specific place
In the following example, “ce” refers to the fridge (frigo):
Q: Ci sono ancora le fragole in frigo? = there are still some strawberries in the fridge?
A: No, non ce ne sono più = no, there aren’t

3) as an intensifier, so it doesn’t really have a meaning on its own but it gives more strength to the sentence.
For instance: non ce la faccio più = I can’t anymore
