Today I’ll show you a very important Italian verb for talking about obligations and duties, but also for advice or needs: “dovere”. It’s a modal verb, meaning that it’s followed by another verb in the infinitive form. It’s also irregular so you need to learn its conjugation by heart.
Here you have the present tense:
Io devo
Tu devi
Lui/Lei deve
Noi dobbiamo
Voi dovete
Loro devono

This verb is used in the following situations:
For obligations
For needs
For strong recommendations
For Rules
As a noun (with the meaning of duty)
