Integrating Education and Agriculture in the SAT Programs of Colombia and Honduras
Leonardo Duque will discuss the origins of the System of Tutorial Learning SAT (Sistema de Aprendizaje Tutorial) in FUNDAEC, Colombia. He will explain how a group of university professors undertook a diagnostic analysis of rural development and poverty in the Cauca valley region of Colombia, and how this led to FUNDAEC's agricultural program and SAT.
Dr. Erin Murphy-Graham will give an overview of her research throughout the years on SAT as quality secondary education, briefly discussing some of the curricular materials that focus on ecosystems and agricultural themes. She will explain how some of the core ideas about agriculture are a foundational component of the curriculum and share some recent data as well as themes related to the use of gardens in teacher training.

Leonardo Duque has worked as a professor in Colombia for FUNDAEC's University for Rural Wellbeing (Non-Profit Foundation for the Application and Teaching of Science) and Javeriana University. He is the author of several books. In 2022 he published his latest book: The Single Science, and is about to release the second edition. Leonardo is currently serving as a professor in the first Ph.D. program of the Bahá’í Institute of Higher Education in Iran.

Dr. Erin Murphy-Graham is a scholar in Comparative and International Education currently serving as an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Berkeley in the School of Education. She began her work in this area over twenty years ago as a Masters’ student in Comparative and International Education at Oxford University. She has cultivated a strong research partnership in Honduras and has written and spoken about the program’s efficacy and practices. As a result, SAT is now well-known in the field of international development education and has been featured by prominent initiatives that aim to improve education for youth globally. Most recently, together with Diana Pacheco, Ph.D. and The Bayan Association in Honduras, she has worked on the design and implementation of a curriculum to prevent adolescent pregnancy and early marriage in Honduras, Holistic Education for Youth.
