Changing fuel filters on a 2017 Honda BF150A outboard (both filters) due to a surging problem

One thing with outboards is that everything is packed in and sometimes hard to locate.
That is certainly the case with the fuel filters on this 2017 Honda BF150, Follow along as we show you where the filters are, and explain what this boat was doing, and why its important to change all the filters rather than just one.

This BF150 was surging and nearly stalling above 3000rpm, but this kind of problem could happen at any throttle range, 4000rpm if the filters were less clogged, 2000rpm if it was more clogged, ultimately it will only get worse, so if you aren't seeing the 5000rpm or 6000rpm or wherever your rated max rpm is without surging, its past time to change those filters!

The filters you'll likely want for your Honda, These definitely fit a 2017 BF150A but likely fit a pile of other models:
➡Primary filter (Suction side, inside plastic bowl Sierra #18-79909): https://amzn.to/3dv6J2y
➡Secondary filter (After lift pump, inside VST housing, Sierra #18-79908): https://amzn.to/3pCIMIG
You may be able to find cheaper filters from other brands, but those are the ones I recommend.

Most modern outboards use a similar arrangement for fuel filtration, some Yamaha and Mercury engines also have a small filter sock that sits on the bottom of the high pressure fuel pump and will cause similar running issues where it may idle fine and then hit a wall where it surges or has issues above a certain rpm and gets worse with more load.
