Functional training isn't about doing whatever you want; it follows a blueprint laid out by nature.

As Humans, our glutes, lats, pecs, hamstrings, and other muscles look the way they do because of the functions we had to perform in order to survive and thrive in our environment. This primarily includes the actions of standing, walking, running and throwing.

Of course we can move on the ground, or pick things up...but think about the movements that you do most on a daily basis. There's a high probability that those motions orient around The First Four.

At Functional Patterns, we focus on optimizing what separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom. And with that, comes the improvement of one's ability to lift, squat, crawl, climb and jump.

This is where Eugene and the rest of the fitness world have it backwards.

Running or sprinting is seen as an accessory exercise, rather than the function that we should focus on most.

It's easier to take an "anything goes" approach when training people, so as to not take responsibility when you fail to improve their condition.

There is a definition to Functional Training, and it's determined by what we do most with our body.

This is how you build a muscular physique that moves well, and doesn't need a high maintenance mobility/stretching routine.
