In this video, I show step by step how I tackled a beautiful scene from Sitka, Alaska, painting the Rockwell Island Lighthouse against dramatic mountains and moody clouds. The main challenge here was painting the soft, misty effect of the low clouds, while still showing the solid shapes of the mountains behind.

I begin by discussing the photo source and thinking about composition. For this scene, I raised the shoreline a bit higher than in the reference. This helps the composition feel better and gives more space to work with the water.

The focus of the demo is on painting clouds with a mix of wet-in-wet and harder edges. I show how to create those soft transitions at the base of the clouds and how to lift out areas while the paint is still damp, to give nice, fluffy cloud shapes. I also explain how to push the distant mountain back, using cool, blue-grey washes, so it looks far away behind the mist.

There are tips for painting the trees as well – working with dark greens and cooler blues, using a mop brush for the tops of the trees and showing how to vary the edges so they don’t look too even. I try to keep the detail simple, only suggesting tree shapes, and making sure they stand out against the background.

The water in this scene is quite calm and plain, so I keep it simple with a grey mix and add just a few soft horizontal strokes for some gentle movement. The lighthouse itself is painted with a touch of red on top to stand out, and some soft shadow to give it shape.
