Join me as I paint this dramatic view of the Flatiron on the Siphon Draw Trail, Arizona. The theme is contre jour, with the sun in front and the rocks backlit for big contrasts and sparkle. I take you through the sketch, first washes and darks, using my usual palette of neutral tint, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, yellow ochre, spring green and a touch of cadmium yellow, with white paint for final highlights.

Three reasons why contre jour works so well in watercolour:
Powerful light and dark. Backlighting gives clear shapes and rich shadow mixes, so the scene reads quickly and looks bold.
Natural glow and sparkle. Saving the white paper and dropping in warm glazes creates bright rims of light and tiny sun flashes.
Beautiful soft versus hard edges. Wet in wet shadows melt away, while dry brush highlights stay crisp, giving depth and atmosphere.
