This film was made at Cresswells' Bakery in Braintree, Essex.



Combine harvester cuts wheat. C/U of blades of machine and wheat being ejected. Men stack the wheat. C/U of a plaster wheatsheaf on the outside of a building. Woman with basket in hand looks through the window of a bakers shop. C/U of display of loaves of bread. Baker kneads dough which is in a kind of trunk. The lid is closed and the dough is left to rise. Lid is lifted and baker cuts large pieces of dough and lifts it out of trunk. Baker cuts and weighs pieces of dough. Tins are filled with the dough. Top shot of baker rolling the dough and dropping it into tins. Lids are put on to tins. Tins are placed into the oven. The fire is stoked with more coal. Baker pushes tin into oven with a long flat paddle. Some loaves are in tins, others are loose. After the loaves have cooked for 45 minutes they are brought out of the oven. Man carries trays of bread.



Women (in fur coats and hats) come into bakers and buy bread. There is a cat sitting on the counter amongst all the loaves. Wouldn't be allowed these days!
