Selfies have become wildly popular and the “holy grail” of social media engagement. But could selfie-related behavior be hurting or helping your body image? In this talk, marketing professor Martha Laham describes how appearance-focused photo activities on social media can profoundly influence the way we see, feel, and think about our bodies. Martha Laham is a professor at Diablo Valley College, where she has taught business, marketing, and advertising for more than 30 years. She has authored college textbooks in marketing and selling, developed instructional materials for educational publishers, and contributed to HuffPost. She is the author of Made Up: How the Beauty Industry Manipulates Consumers, Preys on Women’s Insecurities, and Promotes Unattainable Beauty Standards (2020), and The Con Game: A Failure of Trust (2014). Martha lives in Oakland, California. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
