Learn how to test your gauge for crochet projects and why it's important. You can find the Shaun the Sheep project shown in this video in issue 3 of Your Crochet & Knitting magazine. You can find the magazine in any UK supermarket or click here: http://bit.ly/YCAKMag

Testing your crochet gauge is really important if you are creating projects such as toys or garments. If you don't get it right, you could end up with a jumper that is a lot bigger or smaller than you anticipated.

When it comes to tension squares and testing you gauge, it can seem a little complicated. But hopefully I can break that down for you today in order to make it seem a little less intimidating.

What do I need to know first?
You may find Gauge information on your crochet pattern. lets use todays example of '20 stitches x .... rows per 10cm square'

This simply means that when you measure 10cm you should find 20 stitches within that measurement.

It will also give you suggested yarn and suggested hook size.

How to make your tension square
Ideally you should use the suggested yarn, however this isn't always possible. If you want to substitute your yarn, make sure it's the same yarn weight. e.g. Double Knit.

You want to start off by making your square with the suggested hook size.

In this case, I made my square 10cm x 10cm which was 20 double crochet stitches wide and 20 rows high. I then measured the stitches between 0cm and 5cm and doubled the number. I do this in order to save a little bit of time but it works the same.

What to do is the numbers don't match?

If you discover that you have too many stitches per the stated measurements then your tension is too tight. In this case, you can INCREASE your hook size to cater to your tension.

if you find that you have too few stitches per the stated measurements, then your tension is too loose. In this case, you can DECREASE your hook size.

Don't worry if you have to make a few swatches to get it right. Believe me it's much better to spend a little time with your swatches then realise you entire project is wrong.
