The Wayward Sailors Ep. 15: Yacht work update part 3

Here we go again! The next instalment of our complete rebuild of Cape Petrel. CP is a 60 foot (ish) steel bluewater sailing yacht. We are now 3 years into the project. This episode takes you through some milestone moments.

- designing and building our rear seats/ storage boxes
- designing and building our davit system/ solar arch/ canopy

The davits mean we can hang our dinghy off the back of Cape Petrel instead of needing to hoist it and lash it down on the foredeck. We will also be mounting solar panels on them and the aft stays for the main mast are designed to be fixed to the top of the canopy (which means they are clear of the deck and not in our way)! It took a long time to get the design/ engineering done particularly considering they needed to be strong enough to support 2 tons of dynamic load! We also had to raise and shorten the boom slightly to clear the canopy and stays.

The storage seats are designed to be comfortable, follow the curve of the hull, be lockable with hinged cushioned lids, and to be large enough to store gas bottles for the BBQ.
