Research has shown older adults tend to lose power in the ankles and instead of pushing off, they rely more on the hips and the hamstrings to pull them up the hill when compared to younger adults. If those certain muscles are not ready to work hard when approaching an incline or they fatigue easily- it can lead to compensations like front of the hip tightness or pain, knee pain, back pain and more.

This is why it's so important to strengthen these muscles to help your body work efficiently and avoid more pain and stiffness. Incline walking can be doable even with osteoarthritis. Join Dr Alyssa Kuhn, physical therapist as she shows you exercises for the ankles, hips and hamstrings to help you feel stronger going up a hill.
