Ep. 197 1/2 BONUS: INSTALLING THE LANDSCAPE OF DUNWOODY MOSAIC!
Hey Everyone! Welcome to my studio!
My name is Julie Mazzoni and I will be focusing on The Landscape of Dunwoody mosaic. It is a 36 foot long, 161 square foot mosaic going in a niche on a busy street corner in Dunwoody, GA. I am partnering with mosaic artist Jennifer Freeman. We are using glass and porcelain tile with thinset and silicone. Our substrate is Hardie Backer With Hydro Defense Technology Fiber Cement Waterproof Backer Board. In today's video, we are installing the mosaic!
0:05 It's Go time!!!
0:22 Driving to the job site, I explain our 3 day installation plan. Today we will have an installer helping us get the panels on the wall. Then we will need to patch the holes and seams. The third day will be grouting. Our schedule depends on the weather.
1:10 I've arrived and we need to unload the panels, with panel 12 on top of the heap.
1:20 I show the banner that needs to come down.
1:42 We have a generator to help mix up the thinset. Our installer, Russell is mixing all the thinset and prepping the wall with a notched trowel. Jennifer and I are moving the panels and prepping the backs with more thinset.
2:16 The first one is up! It is panel 12.
2:30 The bottom of panel 11 goes up. Jennifer checks the spacing. Then the top goes on.
3:34 They are going up pretty quickly, but we have to make sure everything is lined up and fits.
4:30 Russell is pre-drilling a hole for a concrete screw to pull the panel tighter to the wall. Then he screws the panel in.
5:20 We unload the other half of the panels from my car while Panel 7 is going up.
6:07 Update on how it's going and the weather.
6:58 Panel 4 going up.
7:08 Jennifer has started patching some of the seams.
7:45 I show how I patch a tiled seam.
8:28 Panel 3 is going up. We're almost to the end!!!
9:19 Russell cuts a sliver off of the end panel so they will all fit. Panel 1 is installed and Russell is finished.
9:53 Jennifer and I focus on patching the seams and holes. We thought this would have to happen on a different day, but we were able to get all the pieces in before the rain came!
10:38 Not even a week later, the weather cooperated with us and we were able to come back and grout.
10:54 Jennifer is taping off the ledge so we don't drop grout on it. I give the mosaic a look over to see if we missed any tiles. We have to also grout the edge all the way around.
12:25 I show my top seam grouting technique. Jennifer has the bottom. We are sharing the middle.
13:37 I'm excited because the seams are blending in so nicely!
14:47 A quick look at our beautiful seams.
14:53 We are on the homestretch, down at Panels 1, 2 & 3.
15:17 TA DA! We've just finished up 6 hours of grouting!!!
15:43 The black tape marks where the seams are.
That's Putting It Together, Bonus Ep. 197 1/2. Thanks for watching. See you next time!!!
