Ep. 205 CHILDREN SPLASHING IN THE MOSES STRIKING THE ROCK MOSAIC!
Hey Everyone, welcome to my studio!
I have been commissioned by a church to make three mosaics that will go around the sides of a fountain, in between three spillways. They are all in the theme of Moses. Because the fountain is round, I will be working on AR fiberglass mesh with silicone as my adhesive. I am using stained glass and 24k gold smalti. The first mosaic is Moses Striking the Rock.
0:05 Recap - I show the design for Moses Striking the Rock in the desert with some people. This week I am working on two children splashing in the water.
0:29 Here's where I'm starting. Several figures are finished, and I am starting with the glass selection for the clothing. Both are wearing blue, but one is more on the blue-green side and the other one I will push the purple.
2:02 I start by laying down shelf paper and deciding on the tonal values. First I need to put all my glass bins away so I don't trip! Then I get after it.
3:13 The mesh grid shows through the light purple glass, which is translucent. I show how that becomes less of a problem once we install the mosaic using white thinset.
Once I have the pattern pieced, I cut it apart and nip the edges down so there is even spacing between the tesserae. I adhere the pieces with silicone.
6:40 I start working on the arms and hands, using three tones and pattern pieces again.
7:25 Now I move on to the hair of the first boy.
7:44 I have a few bad breaks with the hair. So I have to deal with fixing it by cutting a bigger piece that goes all the way to the tip without being a tiny shard. Then I am going to mess with the zig zags on the bottom of the hair.
10:02 I have the hair pretty much how I want it. So I am going to adhere them to the mesh and then come back and fill in the skin tones and finish the hair.
10:57 Starting boy #2. He's getting splashed with water and I need to make the water droplets.
11:14 I demonstrate how I use my water jet glass cutter. Lol. Lots of nipping and grinding later, I've got some nice round droplets of water!
12:08 I show my grinder set up.
13:13 I get after it.
13:35 The glass is the same as boy #1, only I'm using a part of the glass that has some lighter streaking. Once the hair is cut out, I place the water droplets (not bubbles!) where I want them. When I cut the pieces down and place them, I will cut out the portion where the droplet will go.
14:39 Oops. I forgot about his ear. I have to cut some of the hair out so we can see the ear.
15:45 I show how far I got this week, almost finishing the boys splashing.

That's Putting It Together, Ep. 205. Thanks for watching! See you next time.
