Medieval Republics and their portrayal in Crusader Kings 3

Medieval Republics, though fascinating, are not currently playable in Crusader Kings 3. Still it is important to know how Republics work - not just for an anticipated update making Republics finally playable. And it is interesting to have more background on how they actually worked in medieval history.
