Ep. 210 ROCKS, GLASS & SHARD MANAGEMENT FOR MOSES STRIKING THE ROCK MOSAIC!
Hey Everyone, welcome to my studio!
I have been commissioned by a church to make three mosaics that will go around the sides of a fountain, in between three spillways. They are all in the theme of Moses. Because the fountain is round, I will be working on AR fiberglass mesh with silicone and thinset as my adhesives. I am using stained glass and 24k gold smalti. The first mosaic is Moses Striking the Rock.
0:21 An update on the project so far: The rocks have been started and I hope to finish them this week. Once the water droplets are cut out, I'll get started on the rocks.
2:03 I show how I cut the glass down into strips so I can fill in the rocks. I have a standard width and then usually a fatter strip to work with.
3:14 I place the droplets without adhering them. Then I get after the heart shaped rock!
5:17 When working on the brown rock behind the brown staff, I make sure it is a different hue. So I am using a redder brown to differentiate them. A change in value helps even more.
5:40 I start after the rocks to the right of the heart shaped rock.
7:25 It's a new day in the studio and I am determined to finish the area that is finicky.
7:35 I am making a design change to improve it. I am able to do that because my client trusts me to make minor changes without running everything past them.
