#DRINK NAME: Remember the Maine

RECIPE SOURCE: Charles H. Baker Jr's 1939 book "The Gentleman's Companion"

Liquor.com does a great job explaining the story behind the name, check that out here:

INGREDIENTS USED (IN ORDER SHOWN):
1/2 tsp absinthe for the rinse
3/4 oz (22.5 ml) sweet vermouth
2 oz (60 ml) rye whiskey
2 tsp (bar spoon) Cherry Heering liqueur
Garnish with a brandied cherry

EQUIPMENT USED:
Cocktail glass (coupe)
Mixing glass
Bar spoon
Julep strainer

INSTRUCTIONS:
Fill a coupe glass with ice and add a splash of absinthe. Some people like to do a traditional absinthe rinse where you swirl it around and coat the glass. However, for this one I like to just let it chill on ice and coat the bottom portion of the glass.

While the glass cools, fill a mixing glass with ice and add the sweet vermouth, rye whiskey, and Cherry Herring liqueur. Stir this mix for roughly 30 seconds and put on your julep strainer.

Dump out the ice and absinthe and strain the mixing glass into the coupe glass. Garnish with a brandied cherry like Luxardo. Other versions of this call for a lemon twist instead, but like a Manhattan, I think the cherry is a nice touch here.

My wife said this tasted like cough syrup, but I liked it, so to each their own. Cheers!
