OET Speaking | How to Approach a Roleplay on Procedure Enquiry

Описание к видео OET Speaking | How to Approach a Roleplay on Procedure Enquiry

In this video, we will conduct a role-play card discussion in which a person inquires about a medical procedure. The setting for the role-play is a hospital. A 50-year-old patient is scheduled for an endoscopy to investigate their gastroesophageal reflux. The patient would like more information about the procedure. By watching this video, a nurse will gain a clear understanding of the scenario of the endoscopy in the OET speaking role-play session for nurses.

Roleplay Card:

SETTING: Hospital
Nurse- A 50-year-old patient is scheduled for an endoscopy to investigate his/her gastro-oesophageal reflux. He/she wants more information.

Task
* Find out how the patient feels about endoscopy.
* Explain what endoscopy is (insertion of a long, thin tube directly into the
body to observe the internal organ-gastrointestinal tract)
* Explain preparations needed (nil by mouth from midnight, only clear liquids for six hours prior to the procedure).
* Explain the need for fasting (risk of aspiration under sedation, ensuring good view, lowering the chance of regurgitation, improving procedure effectiveness).
* Give information about the whole procedure (30 minutes to 2 hours, anaesthesia: moderate/deep sedation- minimise the pain and discomfort)
* Assure patient complications rare (tear of the gastrointestinal tract)
* Explain the after-effects of sedation (drowsiness, nausea, tiredness, sore throat). Stress the need to arrange for someone to take the patient home.
* Inform post-procedure (mild discomfort, need rest, quick recovery and discharge on the same day).
* No follow-up appointment, if symptoms worsen within 72 hours such as fever, chills, chest pain, nausea or vomiting-immediately seek medical help).

Example 1
SETTING: Hospital
NURSE- You see the mother of a 4-year-old boy who has been scheduled for a gastroscopy next week to confirm celiac disease. The child is not present.

Task
* Find out the reason for the request to see you.

Example 2
SETTING: Hospital
NURSE - A 52-year-old patient is going to have a transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE) next week. You are giving information about the test.

Task
* Confirm the patient is scheduled to have a transoesophageal echocardiogram. Find out if the patient has had one before.
