Ep. 41 A MOSAIC BIRTHDAY SURPRISE, Hammer & Hardie & grouting 2 mosaics! A big birthday surprise! Mailing the rings, starting a new Shelter in Place Mosaic, Hammer & Hardie Demo & grouting the two floral mosaics!

I have all kinds of mosaic projects in the works, so naturally, I take on a 36"x36" canvas painting of my dog, Peanut. I am painting it as a gift for my husband's birthday this week. I even put up a screen so that if my husband looks in my studio, he won't see it. It is taking up so much space in my studio!!!
Finally, I get back to mosaics and add a background to the morning glory.
Then I start on the smalti mosaic with the house shape as a focal point. Using gray thinset, I add bits that radiate out from the house.
I pack up the rings for Rachel Sager's Color Wall at The Ruins Project in a couple of flat rate boxes.
Then it's back to the smalti project, cut slivers and curvy pieces with hammer and hardie. Listen for the "chink" sound of a good cut. Do NOT let the hammer strike the hardie. While positioning the smalti on the hardie, I like to rest the heavy hammer on the edge to give my wrist a rest. Once I have a nice inventory built up, I mix some thinset and get to work on the mosaic, occasionally pausing to cut a custom shape.
Then I grout the orchid using two color of sanded grout. I USE THE NO TAPE METHOD. This means I am extremely careful when wiping and cleaning to not contaminate the separate areas. I work as cleanly as possible, using a vacuum to buff once a haze has formed. This lifts the grout up and off the mosaic nicely.
