Ep. 42 SMALTI AND MALMISCHIATO GARDEN MOSAIC, Thinset, a baby chick is born, & finishing some edges!

I start out the week by priming a standing egg substrate purchased at a craft store. These are usually seasonal items which are only available at certain times of the year.
Next, I squeeze out some gray thinset and get to work on my smalti mosaic, adding bits and wavy pieces in swoopy areas. I want to melt some glass and pull it into filati for this project. Using a cupcake tin, I mix up some "recipes" of different colored smalti cut into small pieces for easier melting. Then I fire up the torch, melt it down and pull! Repeat several times until my recipes are used up.
Switching gears, I start on a little yellow chick using feather cuts. I like to use tweezers and dip and place each pieces.
I demonstrate how I mix up thinset using a Mortar Admix. I talk about storage, shelf life, wearing a mask, how much to mix, slaking and using a baggie. Then I spend about two hours building up some malmischiato "swoops" in my smalti garden, adding millefiori. I show the end result and tell about how working with thinset compares with Apoxie when using filati. The mosaic is entitled "Solace for the Soul."
