The WWE in 1996 was experiencing a slip in popularity. Pro wrestling, as a whole, was still trying to get back to the former glory of the late 80s and early 90s, and with big names like Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage and others taking themselves to WCW, Vince McMahon had tried pushing guys like Diesel and Mabel into the main event spot. Late in 1995, it was decided that Shawn Michaels would be the guy to hold the WWF World Heavyweight Championship throughout much of 1996, and it all started at the Royal Rumble that year.

Shawn Michaels won the 1996 Royal Rumble and got a title shot against Bret Hart at WrestleMania 12 in a 60 minute Iron Man match. Shawn won the championship, and would go on to defend the title against a mixture of different opponents, ranging from Diesel and The British Bulldog all the way to Mankind and Sycho Sid.
