This song has the haunting image of a ‘pardesi panchhi’ – a migratory bird from a foreign land – that wings its way here for a short tryst and then flies away. Kabir calls himself such a bird from a faraway land – at once signaling knowledge of his mortality, as also his bird’s eye gaze on the petty and unconscious preoccupations of the rest of humanity.

During one's yogic journey - which is not result oriented but directed towards the 'wider' experience, towards experiencing the divine vastness - determination is important. consistency is important hence a yogi would be meditating / focusing on the Supreme consciousness with determination all hours of the day. The only thought in his mind is God, God and God! When this happens, it is like a royal ride -Shahi! All majestic and colorful.

The realized yogi knows that the nature of god is -formless, shapeless, tasteless - i.e. beyond senses. The 'form' or name is temporary for a less conscious being to understand. Form is just the few attributes of god that are used by seeker as -a step - to understand the wider nature of god!

English translation of the song -

I'm a bird from another country, baba,
I don't belong to this country.
The people in this country are unconscious,
every moment sunk in regret,
brothers, seekers, I don't belong
to this country.

I sing without a mouth
walk without feet
fly without wings.
Awareness free
of illusion, I play
in the limitless.

Sitting in shadow, I’m on fire.
In sunlight, I’m cool.
My true guru is beyond
sun or shade.
I dwell in the guru.

Stick to your posture
day and night
but the lord won't descend.
Wise ones and meditators
have worked themselves to death
in that country.

The great giver whose form
is formless
takes on the form
of a name.
Mind and breath
can never reach
that country.

Head, toes, eyes
this body
the true teacher has transformed
beyond death.

Kabir says, meet
the formless!
You're free
from death and decay.
