Hi there! In today's episode of Painting Masters we'll take a look at a beautiful painting by Nita Engle, called "Breaking Into the Sun-Sea Cloud".

🎨NITA ENGLE 🎨

I became familiar with Nita's work through here book called "How to Make a Watercolor Paint Itself".

The name of the book is 100% befitting it. The book presents what Nita calls "experimental" techniques for painting realism.
(I reviewed that book here:    • How to Make a Watercolor Paint Itself...  )

Her work, in my opinion is highly realistic AND atmospheric, which is an amazing and rare combination. She has received several awards for it.

I highly recommend getting her book for inspiration purposes.

🎨NITA ON YOUTUBE 🎨

Nita actually has several videos on YouTube. Here's a really good one:

And also, here's my full review of her book:

🎨TALKING POINTS 🎨

Here are some of the things I discuss in this video...

The beautiful atmosphere - This is the thing that really makes Nita's work stand out.
Her beautiful execution of the technique, in a way that's both atmospheric and realistic.
She also really allows the paint to do whatever it wants.

The idea of the painting and the composition - The ship moving from the darkness and into the light, the space to the left, hinting at the movement and so on.

The highlights on the clouds - This is actually an amazing effect she achieved here. The highlights really convey warmth, by making use of smart play with the shadows.

The beautiful stormy sea - This is a staple of Nita's techniques. The way she created the see in a detailed and realistic manner, by letting the paint run freely.

🎨CONCLUSION 🎨

I hope you enjoyed this episode!
As always, let me know if there are other artists you want me to review.
I already have a HUGE list, and I hope to get to all of them (:

And until next time, take care!
