The Narendra Modi government at the Centre is set to constitute a national commission to assess the social, economic and educational status of Scheduled Castes, or Dalits, who converted to religions other than Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism.
For decades now activists and court petitions have raised the demand that Dalit Muslims, Dalit Christians to be given an SC Status as the Scheduled Castes list is the only one that links reservation benefits with one’s religious identity.

The Supreme Court bench hearing the matter has given the centre time until 11th October to make its submissions.
We discuss the issue with activist John Dayal.
