"Tic Tok" 2019 - An Abstract Wooden Rolling Ball Sculpture

This is an idea I had for a while, and last year it finally came to fruition. It's a mash-up of two recent interests of mine - abstract wooden sculptures and rolling ball sculptures (RBS). As far as I know, this has never been done before - maybe it has, but I've never seen anything like it.

Process - once I had the chain lift, (fabricated by my friend Tom Harold), I built it into the central column. Then I started at the top, building various ramps out of pieces of scrap wood found in my studio/wood shop. Only rarely did I fabricate a piece for this, but instead tried to use pieces as I found them. The one thing I did do - and it's pretty obvious - is carve, by hand, a groove into the pieces, and in some places, drill holes for the balls to go through.

The piece measures 45" x 17" x 15" and is currently available directly from me for $2850.
