The color and character of a person’s sputum can provide important clues about what might be happening in their lungs and airways. For example, sputum that is yellow or green is often a sign of bacterial infection, as it reflects the presence of immune cells and enzymes fighting off invading microbes. In contrast, pink, frothy sputum is a classic hallmark of pulmonary oedema, where fluid builds up in the lungs and mixes with air, creating a bubbly, blood-tinged appearance.
When sputum contains dark red blood, it can indicate several serious conditions. Pneumonia may cause bleeding due to inflammation and tissue damage, but other possible causes include tuberculosis, pulmonary embolism, or even lung cancer. Because of this, bloody sputum always warrants careful assessment to rule out life-threatening disease. In short, while sputum color alone cannot provide a definitive diagnosis, it serves as a valuable clinical sign that can guide further investigation and treatment.
