Bringing the Internet of Things to the Underwater World - Dr. Fadel Adib

Описание к видео Bringing the Internet of Things to the Underwater World - Dr. Fadel Adib

Bringing massive connectivity to low-cost, low-power ocean sensors is important for numerous applications spanning marine sciences, sustainability, climatology, defense, robotics, geology, space exploration, and food security. However, standard IoT technologies (e.g, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS) cannot operate underwater. This talk will describe how our research is changing this reality by inventing IoT technologies that are inherently designed for the ocean. By rethinking the entire IoT technology stack in the context of oceans, my team has introduced low-cost (less than $100), net-zero-power, scalable technologies that seamlessly operate underwater and pave the way for massive underwater sensing, networking, localization, imaging, and machine learning.

Fadel Adib is an Associate Professor at MIT, where he leads the Signal Kinetics research group. He is an inventor of new wireless and sensor technologies for networking, health monitoring, robotics, and ocean IoT. Adib founded multiple startups, including Cartesian Systems, which aims to sense the physical world at an unprecedented precision. He has received various awards and honors for his research: he was named one of the world's top 35 innovators under 35, received the ACM SIGMOBILE Rockstar Award, and was invited to present his research to multiple heads of state including to President Obama at the White House.

Rock Talk #5, 2023 Season
Recorded: July 4, 2023

About Rock Talks
Our Rock Talk Seminar Series is a long-standing and well-loved tradition at SML. Historically, faculty members and guest speakers would gather with students on Appledore Island's rocky shoreline (giving the Rock Talk series its name) to present on a wide range of topics related to natural history, ecology, biology, and more. To stay connected with our community following the pandemic, we transitioned our Rock Talks online and have featured guest speakers from across the world. On our channel, you will find recordings from past seminars.

Please note: All Rock Talks begin at 8pm on Tuesdays for the 2023 season. You must register for the live presentations ahead of time, and all registration links will be shared on our website. We look forward to seeing you at our next Rock Talk!
