Kazakhstan, Karaganda - Walking down Yermekov Street

Описание к видео Kazakhstan, Karaganda - Walking down Yermekov Street

It’s time for some more Karaganda! In this video I decided to walk from the industrial part of the town, where my hotel was located, to the center. And failed miserably, because I ran out of space on my phone a few hundred meters short. I could almost see the final destination, but alas! As they used to say in the Arrow TV-show, I failed this city.

But walking is not only about the destination, it is about the process itself. And it is not always about sightseeing, routine life can be just as interesting. So, without further delay, let’s dive deep into industrial Karaganda.

00 - Start of the walk. This is the spot where one of our previous walks ended:    • Kazakhstan, Karaganda - Walking aroun...  . The exact address is Yermekov St, 114/1.
36 - We are approaching Yermekov Street. This street is going to lead us to the center of the city.
51 - The man after whom the street was named - Alimkhan Ermekov. He was the first Kazakh professor of Mathematics and one of the founders of Alash political party. Members of Alash tried to seize the moment after the Russian Revolution and create Alash Autonomy, an autonomous state for Kazakhs within the borders of the Russian Empire. The party lasted only for a few years before it was banned by the bolsheviks, but many of its members were killed, put in labor camps, blacklisted or harassed in some other way in the following decades. Yermekov wasn’t killed, but he spent many years imprisoned. After his release from the prison, he settled in Karaganda.
00 - Heading south-east on Yermekov St.
47 - Preview of coming attractions. We are about to see a lot of pipes.
34 - Corner of Yermekov St, Lipetskaya St and Asphaltnaya St. It is a curious corner, because here Yermekov St does a 90 degree turn and heads north-east. And we will follow.
43 - Pipes.
29 - Sanatorium Beryozka is located over there. I noticed that one of its walls is decorated. Let’s take a closer look.
36 - Walking under the pipe.
59 - It’s hard to find a good angle. Trees are covering the wall of interest.
35 - This angle is good enough.
20 - Back to Yermekov St.
02 - Checking the ornament on the balconies.
15 - Corner of Yermekov St and Botanicheskaya St.
58 - Walking along the pipe.
36 - Corner of Yermekov St and Sadovodov St.
45 - Military Infirmary of Karaganda.
33 - Chemical and Metallurgical Institute named after Abishev.
45 - Bas-relief of Jantore Abishev.
58 - Memorial tablet dedicated to Marat Mukhametzhanov, Kazakh chemist.
05 - Memorial tablet dedicated to Jantore Abishev. He was a prominent Kazakh metallurgist.
17 - Some pipes. And a small bridge over them, of course.
13 - A generic graffiti.
06 - Another typical graffiti.
19 - Sure, we’ve witnessed some extreme piping in Astana, but Karaganda takes it to another level. I am loving it!
05 - Corner of Yermekov St and Gazaliyev St. And absolutely outrageous piping.
44 - Memorial tablet dedicated to Maulen Gazaliev, a great Kazakh teacher.
36 - One more simple graffiti.
16 - Google Maps say this is Kazakh-American English Language Bebra School. What’s “Bebra”? Why’s “Bebra”? I have no idea. But it is definitely an English language school.
38 - Steampunk kingdom.
45 - The pipes end here. But not our walk.
13 - So many interesting things ahead, but here I ran out of space on my phone.

And now, my walk has ended...

The walk took place on 30 June 2024.
