8-Year-Old Prince Charles' First Day at Cheam School (1957)

On 24 September 1957, 8-year-old Prince Charles arrived at Cheam School in the Hampshire town of Headley with his parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Charles was beginning at Cheam as a new pupil, having left Hill House School the previous year. Hill House was only established in 1951, and Charles’ attendance made him the first Royal heir to be educated at a civilian school. He left after only six months, having apparently had difficulty mixing with other pupils.
