Sweden formally ended more than 200 years of non-alignment by joining the NATO alliance in March 2024. In this Conversation video, former SIPRI Chair and international diplomat Jan Eliasson reflects on the difficult decision to join NATO, Sweden’s contribution to international peace and security as a non-aligned country, and his hopes for Sweden’s future role as a NATO member and a Nordic country.
Ambassador Eliasson has served as Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and as Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. He was Chair of the SIPRI Governing Board from 2017 to 2022.

This is one of two SIPRI Conversation videos released to mark the 75th anniversary of NATO’s foundation. You can watch an interview with the veteran Norwegian diplomat and humanitarian Jan Egeland here:    • Jan Egeland on NATO
