In Armor of God Pt 6: Helmet of Salvation, Walking The Text founder Brad Gray explores Paul’s meaning behind the helmet of salvation. How does the image of a helmet and the concept of salvation fit together? In Greek, a helmet is literally that which you wrap around your head to protect you. And in Hebrew, salvation can mean deliverance.

So, what Paul seems to be saying is this: Standing firm in the midst of the battle begins with how we think. Our adversary, the evil one, loves to get us thinking in ways that are contrary to what God would want for us. Once planted in our minds, those thoughts wreak havoc on our lives. Paul seems to suggest that if we want to be delivered in the midst of an onslaught, we’ve got to be intentional about how we’re guarding and protecting our thoughts.

There’s just one problem. Knowing what’s true from what’s a lie isn’t always easy to determine. And that’s where Paul’s image of the helmet of salvation has a second meaning. In the Roman military, the leader’s helmet had a bright red plume on it. In the chaos of battle, soldiers kept their eyes fixed on the leader’s helmet because that’s where their deliverance came from. In Armor of God Pt 6: Helmet of Salvation, you’ll understand why it’s so important to be vigilant about what you let into your mind and who you look to in the midst of the struggle.
