In this video I discuss how I went from only having 21 subscribers, to over 1,000 subscribers in only 10 days! I've also grown to over 4,000 subscribers in the last 3 weeks! I did this by taking advantage of the new YouTube feature called YouTube Shorts. YouTube Shorts is YouTube's competitor to TikTok and Instagram Reels in the vertical video format. YouTube first announced YouTube Shorts after TikTok was banned in India. However, it was not coming to the United States and other markets for the time being.

After YouTube announced it for the Indian market, I started to notice that Shorts were being recommended to me in the in the same section as YouTube Stories. Specifically, I noticed that Mr. Beast created an individual channel just for YouTube Shorts so I knew I should take it seriously. At the time there was not a lot of great information available about YouTube shorts, so I had to guess at how they were featured. Since then, YouTube has announced that in order for a video to be featured as a Short it has to meet 2 criteria:
1. The video needs to be in the vertical format
2. The video needs to be less than 60 seconds long
(Optional) In some places YouTube also recommends including "#shorts" in the title or description of the video but it is not required.
The thumbnail and description do not matter very much for YouTube shorts, but the title does. In this case, your title should be less than 40 characters because that is what can be seen in the shorts feature. YouTube randomly chooses a frame from your video to use for the vertical thumbnail.

My secret to growing my subscriber count so quickly was just posting multiple YouTube Shorts videos. Since there is so limited content on YouTube Shorts the potential for your video to be seen is significantly increased. The first YouTube Shorts video that I ever posted took off an now has over 2.1 million views which is unheard of for someone that had 21 subscribers when they posted that video!

I have had a couple issues with using YouTube shorts up to this point. The first is that YouTube doesn't seem to be giving me all of the subscribers that I earn through the shorts feature. For example, on my most popular video it says that I've gained over 5,500 subscribers but my public facing subscriber count is around 4,400. I've also seen that some other creators are experiencing this same problem. Secondly, the watch time that you earn through YouTube shorts does not count towards YouTube monetization. The subscribers that you earn do count, but the watch time does not. This is because YouTube shorts are not currently monetized as a whole.
