I'm Ted Norby Director of Instruction for the National University Golf Academy. What I want to talk about today in the short game is the lower body and specifically the stability of the lower body in the shots that I'm playing around the green. Unfortunately because of how we set up, with the most players put their left arm really straight, head way back so they have to use their legs to go through on just about every shot. You look at the best players the legs support what the upper body's doing. But the legs aren't creating any motion, in the short game. Actually if you look at most of the good players, the legs really aren't doing anything especially this left leg, it's a post that I'm turning my upper body around. That way it's all kind of one piece and, and I get all the small muscles in my arms out of play. If the legs are moving around, upper body can't move so then I have to use my hands to much in the short game.

So what I want to do is, stabilizing this lower body, think about the legs especially this left thigh and left knee really doesn't move a whole lot as the shoulders and the chest go forward. Low shot, high shot, doesn't matter. If I want the low shot, lower body's stable, that left knee doesn't move too much, and the handle stays ahead of the club head. Everything finishes low. If I want a higher shot, lower body doesn't move too much but now I'm gonna let the club go ahead and pass my hands. I'm gonna finish in the same place with my hands and my body and the leg, it's just there's my low running shot, there I've let the club pass for the higher shot.

If you find that your lower body's moving around too much, one of the best drills for this is to go ahead and set up, start with the ball just in the middle of your stance, narrow stance and now just bend your right knee and pick up your right foot. So that your just barely touching the ground with the toe of your right foot. That shifts my upper body forward and puts all of my weight on my left leg. This is going to be tough to keep this stable now but now I have to keep it stable or else I'll fall over. So now that lower body stays stable, as the triangle goes back and forth. Yea, the hips gonna rotate a little bit but I can't be sliding around with my legs. So, ball in the middle, right knee flexes up, barely put the weight on the left foot and then keep that left thigh stable as you move to the target. And you'll find you'll hit a lot more solid shots and get the right distance control. Quiet your lower body down; your short game will get better.
