SUNRISE! Hallett & Flattop Summit Hike

Описание к видео SUNRISE! Hallett & Flattop Summit Hike

Our hike up to the summits of Flattop Mountain and Hallett Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park was nothing short of monumental. This journey was especially meaningful for our family, as it marked the completion of an adventure we had to turn back from last year due to sudden weather changes while sitting at the Tyndall Glacier. After closely tracking the weather for a week, we finally found the perfect opportunity to give it another go—and this time, we made it!

Our day began early, with alarms ringing at 3:00 a.m. in Estes Park. By 3:30 a.m., we were out the door, determined to reach the treeline before sunrise. The goal was to catch the first light at the Emerald Lake Overlook on the Flattop Mountain trail, and we did just that. Witnessing the dawn break over the mountains while perched above the treeline was a surreal experience that set the tone for the incredible adventure ahead.

I’m beyond proud of my 11-year-old twin sons, who not only woke up in the middle of the night but also tackled this challenging trek with enthusiasm and determination. The hike itself was filled with stunning milestones, each more breathtaking than the last. Starting at Bear Lake, we took the Flattop Mountain trail, pausing at the Dream Lake Overlook and then the Emerald Lake Overlook. From there, we ascended above the timberline just in time to sit and watch the sunrise—a moment of pure magic.

The trail then led us around the north side of Flattop, unveiling awe-inspiring views of the massive Stone Mountain. As we approached the summit of Flattop, the vistas to the south, overlooking Glacier Gorge, were simply spectacular. We could see Longs Peak, the Keyboard of the Winds, Chiefs Head, and so much more. From the Flattop summit, we pushed on to the Tyndall Glacier and finally made it to the top of Hallett Peak!

This hike was not only a physical challenge but a journey filled with emotional triumphs. The combination of awe-inspiring scenery, family bonding, and the satisfaction of completing what we couldn’t last year made this adventure one for the books. Next on our list: Otis Peak—you’re up next!

Five stars for an unforgettable family adventure!
