The Demon Finn Balor faced Samoa Joe for the NXT Title at Takeover The End in a steel cage match in 2016. Finn tried to escape, Joe stopped him and hit him with the Muscle Buster to retain the title. On NXT, Finn talked about what’s next for him, Shinsuke Nakamura interrupted and said that Finn’s the icon of NXT and if he wants to be the champion, he must beat the icon. They met next month. Shinsuke dodged Finn, hit him with the knee and then with the Kinshasa to win the match. Two weeks later, Shinsuke beat Wesley Blake and William Regal gave Shinsuke a shot at the NXT title. Joe said Shinsuke doesn’t deserve it and he won’t face him. Regal told him his decision is final and if he refuses, he will strip him of the title. Next week, Joe sent a message to Regal and Mojo Rawley attacked him, then Joe put him to sleep. A week later, Joe defeated Rawley, Shinsuke came out and taunted Joe. A week later, things got heated between them. Also a random Otis cameo. They met at Takeover Brooklyn III. Joe hit Shinsuke with the Muscle Buster and he kicked out. Went for it again, Shinsuke countered him, hit him with the knee and Joe kicked out. Shinsuke kicked him again, hit him with the Kinshasa and pinned him to become the new champion.
