Nuwaragala – Chasing Misty Sunsets & Ancient Kingdom Secrets | පැරණි මිත්රයා සොයා නුවරගල තැන්නට | අලිත් එක්ක නුවරගල
විජේ මාමාව සොයාගෙන මහ වැස්සෙ නුවරගල කදු මුදුනට.
Our journey began the previous evening around 6 PM from Colombo. By the time we reached Kandy, it was almost midnight, as we had stopped by a few friends’ places along the way. Heavy rain followed us through the night.
The next day, our destination was Nuwaragala ,once believed to be the kingdom of King Saddhatissa, the brother of King Dutugemunu. Even today, the mountain still holds the ruins of an old castle and a rock pool built on its summit.
But this journey was more personal to me.
My main aim was to meet one of my guides from the past, “Vije Mama” who lives close to Nuwaragala.
We started again from Kandy, and by the time we reached Vije Mama’s place, it was almost 6 AM. Despite the early hour, they welcomed us warmly with smiles and even had a meal prepared for us. After eating, we began our hike.
The weather was cloudy, and the rain hadn’t stopped. But that didn’t stop us.
There were five of us, and with Vije Mama, an elderly gentleman and a young man joined our journey. The forest was silent and magical. It was the rainy season, so everything around us was lush green and alive.
We managed to reach the summit of Nuwaragala before sunset. There were a few important things to do before the sun went down. This area is known for elephants, and we were lucky enough to spot a few along the way.
We gathered firewood for the bonfire and fetched water for drinking and cooking. Soon, we were ready to witness the sunset.
At the summit, it was misty. The cool breeze, thick clouds, and fading golden light created a sunset experience unlike any I had seen before at Nuwaragala. It felt different, peaceful, powerful, unforgettable.
After sunset, we prepared our dinner together. The conversations with “Vije Mama”continued for hours.Stories, laughter, memories. Those moments meant more than the climb itself.Later, we set up our tents and called it a night.
Morning at the summit was another world. Cold mist, soft winds, and beautiful shades of the sky welcomed us. The sunrise was breathtaking calm, pure, and deeply moving.
After soaking in the moment, we packed up our tents and began our descent.
Back at Vije Mama’s house, we gave him a small gift and said goodbye, promising that we would return soon.
This was our journey to Nuwaragala .Filled with history, friendship, elephants, misty sunsets, and magical sunrises.
Nature was simply amazing.
And all of it is captured in this video.
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed living it.
Greetings,
I am Dinesh. 🌿
