Pico da Vara - São Miguel - Azores Hiking

On our quest for the most beautiful hiking routes, we tackle the highest point of Sao Miguel. Pico da Vara is the peak of the largest island of the Portugese archipelago.

The path along the PRC07 SMI is not the most beautiful trail, as it simply leads up through the forest on a steep route. The views from the top are supposedly amazing, though. We cannot speak to that, as we ascended on a rainy day.

If it is wet, much of the path can get very slippery.

Access to the parking lot at the start of the trail is a bit sketchy. The route up is only possible through a gravel road, but it is possible for normal cars and does not require a 4x4.

To access this trail, you are required to fill out https://servicos-sraa.azores.gov.pt/d..., as this hiking tour is going through a nature protection area. It is not the most beautiful hiking tour we did on the island, but you can subscribe to not miss that one, when we post the video.

The form is only available in Portugese, but Google translate is helpful enough to fill it in.
