In Part-2 of this two part series, we will replace the rear shocks on a typical BMW E90, E91, E92 and E93 3-series chassis (06-12). See Part-1 for the front shock/strut assembly replacement.

The Bentley repair manuals will cover standard shock and spring replacement for the various BMW and MINI models. This DIY will assume that the DIYer has the applicable Bentley manual for additional reference as well as fastener torque values. Note that we will be installing the Koni Sport shocks. However, the procedures would be the same for any common shock/strut replacement.

PARTS USED:
• New shocks/struts (Bilstein, Koni, Sachs, etc.)
• New Shock install kits (compression bumpers, dust shields, spring pads, etc.)
• New upper strut and shock mounts
• New strut & shock mount gaskets (as required)
• Rear shock mount reinforcing plates

TOOLS USED:
• Bentley Repair Manual
BavAuto spring compressor tool
• BavAuto Non-Marring pry bar set
• 13mm through 18mm ½"drive socket & ratchet set with various extensions
• 4mm through 8mm Allen keys or bits (for ratchet use)
• 13mm through 18mm combination wrench set
• Assorted flat and Phillips screwdrivers

PROCEDURE:

REAR (applies directly to the E90/91/92/93 3-series)

1) Safely raise the rear of car, with suspension hanging.

2) Remove the wheels.

3) Remove the lower shock mount nut. Hold the shock body with an open end wrench to prevent it from turning.

4) Remove the trunk side trim panel. We found that we could simply remove the fasteners on the forward half of the panel and fold it rearward (via the access through the fold-down rear seats).

5) Remove the upper shock mount access cover,

6) Hold the shock shaft with a6mm socket or wrench and loosen the shock mount nut. Remove the nut and attached bushing.

7) From under the car, compress the shock by pulling down on the upper section. Pull the shock out of the mounting hole in the shock tower and remove the shock from the suspension area.

8) Install the new compression bumper and dust tube on the new shock, along with the new lower half of the upper mounting bushing assembly.

9) Install the new shock assembly into the lower control arm and the upper shock tower mount area. Compress the shock to install, as in step #7.

10) Install the lower bushing nut.

11) Install the upper nut and bushing.

12) Install the shock mount rubber cover.

13) Install the trim panel.

14) Repeat for the other side.
