OIL PAINTING TIME LAPSE DEMO: Painting a Wedding Portrait

A short time-lapse video showing the process of painting "A Wedding Portrait".
Commissioned to commemorate the Wedding of Mark and Claire Fernyhough. I really enjoyed painting the background on this one and loved the reflective colours in the dress.
Oils on Canvas 150cm x 100cm.

Mark and Claire wanted to commemorate their wedding with a painting, something different from their photos. So we decided to hire out the church for an afternoon sitting and recreate the scene for the painting. The church was Holy Trinity Church" Eccleshall in the North of England.

This is slightly different to my usual work, in that I painted the figures last. Normally I like to start with the eyes then face, then build the body and background up concurrently.
In this particular case, I had 2 or 3 different possibilities for the pose, and was still undecided upon which to use when the painting began. so I penciled it in, and got started on the background whilst Mark and Claire made the final decision on which pose they wanted me to paint.

This portrait was completed in the studio concurrently alongside 3 other portraits, over the period of 4 months.

Procedure:
2 x meetings
1 x 3hr sitting to take reference photos.
16 hrs planning and composition work

Materials used:
pre-stretched pro cotton medium grain canvas.
Paints: Michael Harding and Winsor and Newton oils.
Brushes: assorted non branded
Thinner: Turpentine
Medium: Liquin
Varnish: Talons spray- Gloss

Colour palette used:
I like to keep a fairly simple palette, warm and cool of each is usually enough to mix most tones. I never use black.

Basic colours:
Titanium White
Cadmium yellow
Lemon yellow
Cadmium red
Alizarin Crimson
Phthalo blue
French Ultramarine

Additional:
Flesh tint
Yellow ochre
Raw Umber
