Hello Friends

This is the answer to your question.

Why do we feel drowsy, feel sleepy after having a meal?
Why does it make us slow and dull as soon as we have food? Is there a way to reduce or avoid this effect?

Generally, once you finish your meal, blood circulation increases in your stomach area to digest the food that we eat. Hope you all know this.

I want to stress out the important things here at this moment. There are two reasons behind it. One is because of the circadian rhythm. It is our inbuilt clock inside our body which tells us when to sleep, when to eat, how our heart should perform etc. It gives signals to all the parts of the body.

If you are a person who who starts the day by waking up between 6 to 7 Am, then there would be a slum between 2 to 4 pm in the circadian rhythm. You may feel the dullness because of this effect especially after having your lunch.
Secondly, it may be because of the parasynthetic nervous system. When you have your food, there will be some chemical reactions happening in your brain. Due to the reactions, you may feel tired or sleepy. There is an enzyme called ceratonin which is secreted in the brain. This will cause your body to be in a relaxed stage.
Lets set aside all these natural responses altogether.

But if you feel the same dullness every day, it may be due to excessive eating. Eating more than what is required may be the cause.

Your meal should be a balanced diet. There is no harm in eating rice, but at the same time, you should add fruits and vegatables alongside. Fibre rich vegetables should be added to your meal.

Split your meal into portions which complement one another. Excessively eating only rice is not good. To make it simple, if rice is 50% of your meal, add 50% of the other half as different vegetables.
Reduce the quanity of rice intake and increase vegetables in your food.

While eating vegetables, it can be cooked or it can be eaten raw. Like for example, lettuce or cabbage can be eaten raw.

When you eat raw vegetables, digestion takes place at a faster rate. When digestion is faster, you will feel brisk and active.

You may be a non vegeterian. Nothing wrong in it. You can eat all types of non vegeteraian food. But the process of digestion takes much longer than a veg food.
To digest the non vegeterian food, more blood needs to be circulated and it takes more time. You can have any type of food, but add some vegetables along with your regular diet.

One big mistake everyone does is having a sweet after your meal. Generally, there is a dip in our body levels after your meal and to satisfy the craving, we eat sweets after our meal. It has become a habit in our culture.

Once in a while or 2 to 3 days a week is also ok. But dont make it a habit. My advise is to have a dessert once in a week. This is also one contributing factor.

Next is processed foods. Too much of oil content in your food or high fat foods are also reasons for your dullness.

If you understand these facts and slowly start changing the style, you will feel better.
Most importantly, for office goers who need to perform effeciently during work, feeling dull after your meal is not a good sign.

So the point is, dont eat in excess than what is required and its better to have small portions of food every 4 hours.
See to that your meal has carbohydrates like rice or roti and make sure it has vegetables and fruits alongside.
It is better to have at least two different types of vegetables in your meal. If not, one at the minimum if you dont have the time to prepare.

Make sure your meal has carbohydrates, proteins and fat in it. This type of meal will help you stabilize the insulin level in your body. You will have a stable mind and not have the dip or dullness in your body.

People eat a biryani or Pongal and feel the dullness. Even I have experienced it a few years ago.
You can make some small changes and become an active person.
We should understand this and try to add the right food to your meal.

And most importantly, limit your favorite junk foods to once or twice a week. Let it be on a Sunday. The rest of the time, try to eat food that is good for your body and your health.

Hope you would have now understood why you feel dull right after your meal. Feeling dull is a natural response to a certain extent. If that is continuing, then we should change the way we eat.
