Lecture by Dr. Marom Bikson on "Neuro-vascular modulation: What a new mechanism suggests about how brain stimulation works and how to interpret hemodynamic imaging?" given on Aug 18, 2023 to the 3rd Annual Brain & Human Body Modeling (BHBM) Conference.

Spanning transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS), and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), Dr. Bikson present a mechanistic hypothesis where **brain vasculature is directly activated by neuromodulation**.
Studies that have used hemodynamic imaging (fMRI, fNIRS) to measure responses to brain stimulation, are thus reinterpreted as in fact detecting the mechanism.
This idea has translational implications in the treatment of many brain disorders, brain injury repair (stoke), Long-Covid, and Alzheimer's. The presentation is on new and investigational approaches, and is not medical advise.
